Pheromones!

At Wascana Animal Hospital, one of our top priorities is to minimize patient (and therefore owner!) stress whenever possible to make examinations easier on everyone.  In both our exam rooms and our boarding facilities,we use cat and dog pheromones to help augment our low-stress handling techniques and to make patients that are fearful about being somewhere new, a bit less so!

Adaptil (our dog appeasing pheromone) as well as Feliway Classic (the cat facial pheromone) are both pheromones that were previously available and are still widely used at our hospital and by many of our patients today.   Both of these pheromones are available in the plug-in diffusers and the spray bottles. The Feliway Classic helps to comfort and reassure cats by mimicking the natural feline facial pheromone that happy cats use to mark their territory as safe and familiar.   This product is what we use in our cat exam room as well as both the regular and prestige cat boarding rooms at our hospital.  Feliway Classic is great for cats who are stressed by travelling, boarding, veterinary visits, or new changes in your household (new babies, construction/renovations).  It can also be helpful to assist in the treatment of urine marking, inappropriate widespread scratching (stress-induced rather than natural) or when introducing a new cat into the household.

We are happy to inform our clients that we now carry another new cat pheromone product available at Wascana Animal Hospital called Feliway Friends.  Currently, Feliway Friends is only available in the plug-in diffuser.  Feliway Friends is a synthetic version of the cat appeasing pheromone which mother cats produce during lactation.  This pheromone helps to reduce tension and conflict in multi-cat households by helping cats feel more safe and secure with their surroundings and ease animosity. Cats of all ages can sense this pheromone, and it provides a calming effect that cats can recognize throughout life. If you have cats that fight, chase each other, or sometimes even more subtle conflicts like staring at the other cat or obstructing the door way/litter box entry for the other cat, then this product can be a great additional therapy in addition to the diet, medication or behavioral modifications that one of our veterinarians may recommend.
