A Happy Halloween for your Furry Family Members!

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays- we love the decorations, costumes and fall colors!  As much fun as this evening can be for our two-legged selves, it can cause a lot of fear and anxiety for our furry family members.  Here are some tips to help make Halloween less stressful for your pets:

1) Reduce Front Door Noise- hearing the thunder of dozens of children stampeding up your front steps and shouting "Trick or Treat!" can be enough to send most pets into a stress-induced frenzy, let alone the additional noise that comes from the doorbell repeatedly ringing.  Consider covering up your doorbell and instead using a motion-sensor decoration or camera to alert you to oncoming trick-or-treaters.

2) Provide a safe haven- choose a quiet area (preferrably on the opposite end of the house from the front door noise, or consider the basement or upper floor) that you can provide a sanctuary for your pet during the trick-or-treating madness! We recommend having some calming music playing, using a pheromone diffuser or spray, along with some favorite toys to create a stress-free quiet zone for pets to relax.  Ask our Fear Free Certified team members for more details!

3) Keep Chocolate and Candy Out of Reach- the last thing you need Halloween night is an emergency visit to see us!  Keep toxic chocolate or other xylitol-containing candies out of reach to avoid accidental ingestion.  Even small amounts of dark chocolate or xylitol can be life-threatening to our furry family members.

4) Keep pets indoors- sadly, especially for black cats, animals are often the targets of pranks, mistreatment and harassment on Halloween evening if they are left outside.  To avoid injury or trauma, keep your pet in a safe area at home where they can't accidentally slip out of open doors or windows as people are coming and going.
